Charlie Adams (Quviasupunga)
- PURCHASE:
- IPCD-1297
- IPCT-1297
- One of the all-time hit songs from Nunavik is back in as the title track of a new CD from Charlie Adams. "Quviasupunga", which means "I'm happy" in Inuktitut is presented in two versions on the new disk. Charlie's voice is in fine form throughout the 13 tracks. Some of his classics have been rerecorded here, as well as some new songs. There is hit potential written all over songs such as "Aulaajingnatit" (Don't You Remember), "Anararumalinpunga" (I'm Homesick), and especially "Upingaami" (Springtime) with its beautiful, soaring chorus. The style is folk rock, sung in Inuktitut, with some nice touches of acoustic guitar, a bit of country on "Unikapung" (I'm Telling a Story), and some harder rock sounds.

Qimutjuit Band (Cousin)
- PURCHASE:
- IPCD-0697
- IPCT-0697
- The eight tracks on this CD are at times playful, and will appeal to the child in all of us, and at times more serious. In the context of the northern music scene, there's hit potential written all over a song like Nunavut, the name of the new territory scheduled for birth on April 1,1999. Uvanga is also top 20 material. This recording serves up a nice, easy-listening sound, containing a blend of contemporary drums guitar and bass, with the strong presence of keyboards throughout. This is clear from the start when an inspirational, electronic intro leads into the opening track, Qatangutik. Lead singer Charlie Iqaluk sings with passion in inuktitut on seven songs. The members of the Qimutjuit Band are: Charlie Iqaluk, Eric Atagotaaluk, Paul Kasudluaq.

- Inuutsiarit stands out as the top hit of this new album, Inuuqatik, released by Inukshuk Productions this spring. Over the nine tracks, Charlie Ningiuk-originally from Iqaluit but now living in Inukjuak-covers progressive rock for the most part, and some easy listening. There's a nice fuzz-guitar sound throughout this well-recorded CD.

Uvagut (Inuusivut- Our Ways)
- PURCHASE:
- IPCD-1295
- IPCT-1295
- This recording by the Iqaluit-based six-piece band is filled with folk-rock gems, with a few jolts of progressive rock now and then. Uvagut is very strong melodically, and vocalists Norman Ishultak and Ooleena Nowyook both possess powerful versatile voices. These are put to good use in the song which has become an anthem of sorts, "Nunavut". Jose Arreak's strength on the acoustic guitar shines through in this track as well. The 12 original songs on this CD are well known in the Canadian Arctic. This in one of the great Inuit recordings show casing talents from Baffin Island. A classic.

Tumassi Quitsaq
- PURCHASE:
- IPCD-43096
- IPCT-43096
- Eleven songs sung entirely in Inuktitut by Tumassi Quitsaq in a bluesy rock style, at times veering into country and western, and at others in a progressive rock style, always enjoyable. Quitsaq's voice is distinctive, and best displayed when he toys with the pronunciation of Inuktitut words, evident to any listener, such as in "Sikuliaqsiajuittuq". This fine collection of songs is well recorded and destined to be a northern classic. "Qujarivarit", the closing track, is a brilliant piece of pop.

Charlie Adams (Inuit & Indians) NEW
- PURCHASE:
- IPCD-0303
- Awsome album. Charlie has redone some old songs from the past with modern arrangements along with new songs. The arrangements really blend in with the lyrics which captivates you right in like a movie. When he talks about rain, you actually hear it. This album is like "hearing it, is seeing it". Lots of movement.

André Brassard (Generations) NEW
- PURCHASE:
- IPCD-0305
- OUTSTANDING ALBUM
"Brassard has a knack for lush backgrounds and warm, rich musical textures. It feels like being outside."
- I’d call this more of a new-age acoustic folk/rock CD. The ballads are breathy and mysterious, and the faster numbers have the effect of being echoed over a mountaintop. Brassard has a knack for lush backgrounds and warm, rich musical textures. It feels like being outside.
- From the very first track, it’s hard to classify Brassard’s singing style. Kind of like a blend of Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, and Randy Newman. That approach serves him well on a lot of these tracks, like “End of June” . It’s a cry for love mixed with a message about respecting the earth.
- He is a smart composer. The instrumental “Between Heaven and Paradise” is a standout for its melody on the guitar and lullaby vibe. He also surprised me with “Respect,” a sudden burst of garage rock, again with stellar guitar work.
- Brassard doesn’t do anything halfway. These songs are complex and enveloping, full of atmosphere and life. I keep coming back to that spiritual, new age feel infusing the whole project. I’d like to see him team up with Enya.
